It would be difficult to understate the importance of communication, and how seriously a law practice should take it. If a client is taken on and doesn't hear anything for an extended period of time, they'll start to wonder what's going on. That kind of curiosity is human nature. Letting your client know that things are progressing, that tasks are being checked off, that the job is getting done is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep that client satisfied.
