Smiley Law helps World Trade Center victims
Smiley & Smiley, LLP is very proud to inform you
that we volunteered our services to help victims and
the families of victims of the terrorist attacks on
the World Trade Center. We have been working with Trial
Lawyers Care, a non-profit organization that was created
for the sole purpose of helping victims of the World
Trade Center.
In the months following the attacks, Congress passed
legislation that created the Victim Compensation Fund
from which eligible applicants can receive money as
a result of this terrible tragedy. Smiley & Smiley,
LLP has been representing several families, on a
no-fee-basis, in their application to the Fund in
order to obtain the maximum recovery. We are very pleased
to announce the following results:
An award of $8.6 MILLION, the largest
award paid by the fund in all cases, to "Jane Doe#1,"
the first victim of the World Trade center attacks to
be admitted to the hospital and the last to be discharged
over 14 months later. Jane Doe suffered horrific injuries
when the landing gear of one of the planes came thundering
down upon her, crushing her legs and feet and severing
her buttocks.
This
award came eight months after partner Guy I. Smiley
appeared on national television to champion our client's
case during a one-hour Dateline NBC feature, to an audience
of 13 million viewers, of Jane Doe's heroic course towards
recovery. We are extremely proud to have achieved the
largest award granted by the fund on behalf of our client.
An award of $871,711.20 was obtained on
behalf of the family of a single 26-year-old man who
was attending a conference on the 106th floor
in the North Tower at the time of the attacks. The deceased,
a graduate of Princeton University, was an Assistant
Vice President for a major financial institution. The
award was calculated after an analysis of the decedents
salary history, education and work life-expectancy minus
any money the family received from life insurance or
other collateral sources.
An award of $1,035,613.92 was obtained on
behalf of the family of a single 42-year-old woman who
was a Vice President for a major securities company.
The deceased was a graduate of the University of Arizona
and was known to volunteer her time to help those in
need.
The dedicated lawyers and staff of Smiley &
Smiley, LLP have worked diligently in order to bring
some small measure of comfort to families who have experienced
a loss that cannot be adequately described in words.
We take great pride in this endeavor and have found
it be one of the most rewarding experiences both professionally
and personally.
