College student files medical malpractice claim

It is not uncommon for university students in New York and elsewhere to seek medical help at urgent care facilities when they become ill or injured on campus. Medical malpractice becomes an issue if a patient has been treated with substandard care that has resulted in injury or illness. In worst cases, some patients have died as a result of negligent medical care.

In a recent case, a college student went to an urgent care facility seeking help for pain that he was experiencing in his testicle. A doctor at the medical center apparently disregarded the young man's condition as par for the course, saying that lack of sexual release can cause discomfort and testicular pain. The patient was sent home and told to go to the hospital if the pain was still present in two days.

The student went to a hospital emergency room later that night, still experiencing severe pain in his testicle. Medical staff performed an ultrasound, which diagnosed a potentially serious condition known as, "testicular torsion." This is a medical condition that causes blood supply to be cut-off when a testicle has rotated out of its proper position.

The young man underwent emergency surgery; unfortunately, he suffered loss of the testicle even after surgery. Medical data states that in cases of testicular torsion, a patient must be treated within six hours or a loss of the testicle could result. In his lawsuit, the man is claiming that the first doctor's failure to diagnose his condition caused him to suffer the loss of his testicle. In New York, any medical patient who has suffered similar injury or illness due to a doctor's negligence can file a medical malpractice claim, as the man in this case did, in order to seek compensation for damages.
