Stocking your vehicle for winter safety

Many New Yorkers travel during the holiday season. Rather than staying in the heart of the city, they opt to visit friends and family all over New England and the rest of the nation. If you will be traveling by car or light truck this season, it is important to prepare for that trip wisely. Not only can solid preparation help you avoid being involving in an auto accident, it can also help you to stay safe if you get stranded during your travels.

Winter can be vicious in some parts of the country. Depending on where you are traveling, you may need to purchase snow chains. Some states require that you have these tools on your automobile if you are going to be traveling in particularly snowy places. Another good tool to have on hand is an ice scraper. Even warmer parts of the nation may experience heavy frost at this time of year. Without an ice scraper, it may be difficult to drive safely until your vehicle heats up substantially.

No matter where you are traveling, it is a good idea to make sure that you have a flashlight, water bottles, a first aid kit and warm blankets stored in the trunk of your vehicle. In addition, you may benefit from storing jumper cables, an extra car phone charger and extra medications for anyone in your traveling party who may need access to them.

You can never tell exactly what kind of mechanical problem, accident or emergency might arise during your trip. As a result, being prepared in these ways may help you weather the unexpected ore successfully and more safely.
