Despite starting as a cartoon series during the 1990s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are still very appealing to children, including those in New York and the entire tri-state area. The pizza-loving Ninja Turtles have made themselves relevant through the decades through several incarnations of television series, comic books and films, the most recent of which topped the box office. With its popularity, merchandise related to the Turtles also has been sold since the beginning. Unfortunately, a six-year-old boy may no longer believe in "turtle power" after he sustained serious injuries because of an allegedly defective Ninja Turtle watch.
According to the child's mother, she bought the defective product at a Toys R Us store in Paramus, New Jersey, which is located less than 23 miles north of New York City, last Easter. In this case, the lawsuit, which was filed in a federal court in Brooklyn, claimed that the battery of the Ninja Turtle watch leaked a corrosive chemical, which caused the boy to sustain severe burns. The mother is seeking $80 million in damages. The manufacturer of the watch was revealed in the lawsuit and, in addition to making watches, the manufacturer also makes personal care items, bags and other accessories. The manufacturer did not comment on the incident.
Toys R Us issued a statement that it is unable to comment on the matter because of the pending litigation. The company, however, recommended that people contact the manufacturers directly for further information. Toys R Us is one of the largest and most recognizable U.S. toy companies. It employs approximately 70,000 people in its stores worldwide.
Defective products, which can range from toys to gadgets to home appliances, can result in injury or consumer death, if left unchecked. New Yorkers who have been victimized by defective products may wish to file a product liability lawsuit to hold the manufacturer, distributor or the store liable. The claim may result in compensation that can be used to pay for the victim's recovery.
