June in New York City is primarily a month marked by children enjoying summer vacation, tourists taking in the sites and adults soaking up the newly warm weather. However, June is also a month marked by a significant number of motor vehicle accidents. Specifically, NYC residents tend to suffer a staggering amount of pedestrian and cycling accidents in June.

Study on spinal cord injuries provides critical new information

When individuals are involved in motor vehicle accidents, work-related accidents and significant accidents of any other kind, they can suffer devastating injuries. One particularly catastrophic injury that accident victims can suffer is a spinal cord injury. Much like traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries can be costly, can require significant medical treatment and can ultimately impact every aspect of an individual’s life.

New York's Lavern's Law will not be passed in 2013

The name Lavern Wilkinson has become famous in certain New York communities. Her story inspired the creation of a bill aptly named ‘Lavern’s Law.’ Lavern was a mother from Brooklyn who was treated in 2010 at an area hospital. Her care team failed to diagnose her lung nodule which later developed into terminal cancer. As a result of New York’s medical malpractice statute of limitations, she was unable to sue her care team because too much time passed between her initial appointment and her cancer discovery.

How the New York Bike Share program can lead to safer cycling

In May, we discussed growing concerns that the new NYC Bike Share program could ultimately inspire more safety hazards than benefits to the community. Thankfully, as the program grows it seems to be inspiring a safer NYC crosswalk culture rather than creating a greater accident risk for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists alike.
